Since the syariah law imposed in Acheh few years ago, I begin to wonder what is the government (especially the central government) interest and motivation behind the rule. Based on what I learned that Acheh already has Islamic tradition, at least what I was told. Basically Muslim in Acheh already adopted the Islamic teaching for decades without syariah law. I know people here are more devoted than what I have seen in people in the city of Jakarta and else where in Indonesia. But, I witnessed many cases that women have now face a new challenge: local authorities arrest women for not covering their heads. The more I heard about the issues of Muslim women in Acheh today, the more it appears that the authorities are using Islam as a way to control locals. I asked an Achenese about how he and his family feel about the type of arrestments. He replied: this is the way Jakarta make us to look bad, being like Islamists or extremist Muslims, on the eyes on the international community; you know, we are not like crazy Muslims; we know enough what Islam is. I hope this syariah law would go away, he continued.
